Serving in both the Hawke and Keating governments Tickner was intrumental in initiating the reconciliation process with Indigenous Australians, but it wasn't until his own son was born that sought out his own history, learning of the exceptional nature of the woman who brought him into the world and the journey to meeting his birth father and siblings.

This startling memoir is a testament to the significance of all forms of family in shaping us — and to the potential for love to heal great harm. Robert was Australia’s longest-serving Federal Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs under the Hawke and Keating governments. He then became CEO of the Australian Red Cross and led the organisation for a decade from 2005.
